Paramount Pictures is developing a new film in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, aiming to reimagine the iconic horror series. The studio has acquired the rights to Wes Craven's original 1984 script, paving the way for a fresh adaptation.
This new iteration will be produced under Paramount's new genre label, Paramount Primal, led by producers J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, known for their work on Barbarian and Friendship. While specific details regarding the film's writer, director, and cast remain under wraps, members of Wes Craven's estate are set to produce. Craven's widow, Iya Labunka, and his son, Jonathan Craven, will serve as producers alongside Marc Toberoff.
"We look forward to bringing the world of Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street to a new and completely engaged generation of fans," stated Labunka. "We know that Wes would have been thrilled to see how horror is taking its long overdue place in the cultural canon. We can’t wait for all of us to sit together in a dark theatre – around the campfire of today – as the next chapter of the Nightmare story unfolds."
Lifshitz and Margules expressed their honor in being entrusted with the project. "We can’t remember a time before we were fans of Wes Craven," they said in a joint statement. "The fact that Iya and Jonathan have entrusted us with this opportunity to help usher a new story into this world is an honor beyond words. We look forward to working alongside them to bring a terrifying new nightmare to audiences everywhere, and to welcome Freddy home.”
The last Nightmare on Elm Street film was released 16 years ago to mixed critical reception and a modest box office performance. Freddy Krueger has been absent from the big screen since then, though attempts to revive the character were made throughout the 2010s. It has been noted that a previously planned reboot was shelved by New Line Cinema as the studio focused on The Conjuring series.
With a new Friday the 13th film also reportedly in development, the return of beloved 1980s horror icons to the cinematic landscape appears to be underway. The new Nightmare on Elm Street film is expected to be a few years away from release.
