Prime Video's "Bloodaxe" Promises "Game of Thrones" Level Drama This January

Prime Video is set to premiere its ambitious new historical drama, "Bloodaxe," on January 20, 2027. The series, from "Vikings" creator Michael Hirst and his son Horatio, has generated considerable buzz, with early screenings suggesting it could be a major hit on par with "Game of Thrones." All eight episodes of the first season will be available at launch, and a second season is reportedly already in production.

A Tale of Succession and Vengeance

"Bloodaxe" centers on the 10th-century saga of Eric Haraldsson, also known as Eric Bloodaxe. The narrative kicks off with a familiar premise: a weakening king struggles to maintain control over a kingdom on the brink of collapse, while various figures scheme for the throne. Eric, a formidable warrior and popular figure, expects to succeed his father, King Harald. However, Harald shocks Eric by naming his younger son, Haakon, as his successor, citing Haakon's diplomatic training in England. Meanwhile, Eric's wife, Gunnhild, harbors her own ambitions to place her husband on the throne, and her exiled brother, Egil, plots his own rise to power from Iceland.

The series, much like "Game of Thrones," appears to spare no expense in its opening. Viewers can expect a blend of political intrigue, dramatic deaths, breathtaking scenery, meticulous production design, and even gratuitous sex scenes. The visual presentation is a significant draw, with rugged landscapes filmed in Ireland and digitally enhanced to depict Norway, while scenes set in Iceland were shot on location to capture its unique geothermal and glacial beauty.

The cast also contributes to the show's appeal. Xavier Molyneux, in what is described as a breakout role, bears a resemblance to the Hemsworth brothers, while Levi Miller is noted for his likeness to Kit Harington's Jon Snow. Elaborate sets and life-sized boats further enhance the immersive experience.

Historical Grit and Theological Conflict

Beyond its visual splendor, "Bloodaxe" delves into a gritty and morally complex world that reflects the distinct ethics of the 10th century. The central conflict of factions vying for power and the looming threat of civil war strongly echoes "Game of Thrones." The series also incorporates prophecies and rituals, set against the backdrop of a theological clash between Norse paganism and the ascendant Catholic faith. An interesting dimension is the portrayal of Viking society as arguably more progressive for its era, with a more egalitarian social structure compared to contemporary European societies.

"Bloodaxe" draws its narrative from historical accounts, primarily those recorded by Icelandic clerics and scholars centuries later. This connection to established history offers a unique advantage, especially when compared to "Game of Thrones." The writers have a defined narrative arc to follow, potentially avoiding the pitfalls of an ambiguous ending. The fact that the story's conclusion is rooted in events over a thousand years old suggests that the Hirsts may be able to deliver a more definitive and satisfying finale.
