Toshiaki Iwashiro's supernatural battle manga, Psyren, is finally receiving an anime adaptation, with its first full trailer revealed during Crunchyroll's Japan Expo 2026 panel in Paris. The series, which was originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 2007 to 2010, will debut on Crunchyroll in October 2026.
This 16-year development marks a significant wait for fans, despite the manga's commercial success, selling over 4 million copies. An anime adaptation was first announced in 2025.
The newly released trailer introduces protagonists Ageha Yoshina and Sakurako Amamiya, high school students transported to a hostile, monster-filled world by a mysterious organization known as Psyren. Alongside other abductees, they must navigate this dangerous environment to find a way back to their own world.
Psyren is noted for its classic shonen battle manga elements, including a justice-driven protagonist, a friend in need of rescue, and a diverse cast of characters with unique abilities. The series also incorporates occult themes, adding a layer of mystery to its narrative. It was popular enough to earn multiple nominations for Anime Japan's "manga we want to see animated" poll.
The series' delayed anime adaptation is seen as a positive sign of the current global anime industry's growth, allowing older, acclaimed manga to gain wider recognition. The manga is currently available in English through Viz Media.
