Hulu has officially greenlit a new iteration of the classic science fiction series The X-Files, helmed by director Ryan Coogler. Coogler, known for his work on Black Panther and Sinners, has been developing the reboot since 2023.
Earlier in 2026, the project saw significant progress with the casting of Station Eleven veterans Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as the series' leads. The announcement was further bolstered by the addition of notable guest stars, including Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, and Ben Foster.
Coogler expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world. Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.”
Deadwyler and Patel will portray two distinct FBI agents, stepping into roles reminiscent of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. They will form an unexpected partnership after being assigned to The X-Files, a division previously dedicated to investigating unexplained phenomena. Coogler has written and directed the pilot episode and will also executive produce alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale, who has prior writing credits on Dexter and Da Vinci’s Demons. Ludwig Göransson, Coogler’s frequent collaborator and Oscar winner for his scores on Black Panther and Sinners, is composing the music for the pilot.
While a specific release date for the series has not yet been announced, Coogler previously indicated that the series would premiere before the next Black Panther film, which is slated for release on December 15, 2028. This suggests that Coogler's X-Files reboot is likely to debut in 2027 or early 2028.
