The exhibition baseball team known for its flamboyant style and viral social media presence, the Savannah Bananas, is set to release its first original song. The team has partnered with Ampersand, the production company founded by EGOT-winning songwriters Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, to create the new single titled "Show Starts Now."
Pasek and Paul have a notable track record, having contributed to critically acclaimed projects such as the musical "Dear Evan Hansen," the television series "Only Murders in the Building," and the films "La La Land" and "The Greatest Showman." They also contributed songs to Disney's live-action adaptations of "Aladdin" and "Snow White."
The duo co-wrote "Show Starts Now" with Cal Shapiro, Ashley Gorley, and Ben Johnson. In a statement, Pasek and Paul expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, calling the opportunity to write the anthem for "Banana Ball's very first original anthem" thrilling and noting their admiration for what commissioner Jesse Cole has built with the team.
Joining the musical efforts is Tony-nominated actor Derek Klena, who also pitches for the Savannah Bananas. Klena, who has previously performed songs mid-game and has a history of working with Pasek and Paul from his involvement in the musical "Dogfight," will be part of the performances.
The Savannah Bananas, including Klena, are scheduled to perform "Show Starts Now" as the opening act for the 2026 ESPY Awards on July 15. The song is currently available for pre-saving on major music streaming services.
The Banana Ball Championship League, which transitioned to full-time Banana Ball play in 2023, will see its inaugural season conclude in October with the first-ever Banana Bowl. Games from the league can be streamed on Disney Plus and the ESPN App.
