The anime adaptation of FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will begin streaming on Crunchyroll in January 2027, but it will arrive in a different format than its Japanese theatrical release. Sekiro: No Defeat has been confirmed as an eight-episode series, rather than a single film.
Producers for the anime initially released an edited version of the project as a 107-minute film during an extended theatrical run in Japan. This theatrical version served as a preview for the full series, which was the original intended format. Producer Tetsushi Suzuki apologized for the lack of clarity regarding the episodic nature of the adaptation.
"This project started as an eight-episode TV series," Suzuki stated in translated comments. "However, as production progressed, we felt a strong desire to have people experience the film's overwhelming visuals and sound on the big screen first, so we released an edited version of the film as a preview." He added that the TV series will include scenes and cuts not present in the film, offering a distinct experience.
Sekiro: No Defeat is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna for studio Qzil.la, with Shunsuke Fukui as assistant director, Takahiro Kishida as character designer, and Shuta Hasunuma composing the music.
The anime's official description outlines the story: "Japan is fractured into many independent nations entangled in ceaseless war. At the center lies Ashina, a land of sacred earth and ancient mystery. Two decades after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina reclaimed the region in a brutal coup, a new threat emerges from within: The Interior Ministry. Desperate to protect his homeland, Isshin’s grandson Genichiro turns to forbidden powers. The only hope lies in a kidnapped boy — the Divine Heir — and his silent protector: a loyal shinobi known only as Sekiro. This is the story of a lord and his retainer — and their quest to restore balance to a nation on the edge."
New episodes of Sekiro: No Defeat will be released weekly starting January 8, 2027. A new poster for the adaptation was also revealed alongside the streaming date announcement.
