Seth Rogen has publicly lauded director Curry Barker's upcoming film, Anything but Ghosts, stating that it surpasses the quality of Barker's recent successful horror movie, Obsession. Rogen shared his thoughts in a piece for Time's 100 Most Influential Rising Stars list, where Barker was featured.
"I've seen Curry’s next film, Anything but Ghosts—and for those of you who, like me, are uncomfortable with this amount of talent in a person so young, I have bad news ... it’s even better, and, to add insult to injury, he’s just as good an actor as he is a director," Rogen wrote. Rogen, who has directed films like This Is the End and The Interview alongside Evan Goldberg, and most recently the Apple TV series The Studio, offered his endorsement.
Anything but Ghosts, a horror-comedy from Focus Features, is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027. The film centers on two individuals who pose as paranormal investigators but find themselves confronting genuine supernatural events. Cooper Tomlinson, who co-starred in Obsession, also co-wrote and stars in Anything but Ghosts. Tomlinson previously described the movie as being akin to "if Key and Peele walked into Hereditary" during an appearance on the Raiders of the Lost podcast.
Barker and Tomlinson have a history of collaboration, beginning with their sketch comedy YouTube channel "that’s a bad idea" in 2016. Their first feature film, Milk & Serial, was released in 2024. The burgeoning success of independent films originating from platforms like YouTube, exemplified by Obsession and Kane Parsons' Backrooms, suggests a new wave of talent emerging into the mainstream film industry.
