Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4 Review: 'Lost and Found' Tangled

Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4, titled 'Lost and Found,' introduces a dense web of intrigue that, while offering standout moments, risks becoming overly convoluted. The episode features a memorable opening sequence in a bowling alley and significant confrontations between Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), as well as a brutal knife fight in a bathroom involving J.K. Coe (Tom Brooke) and Jim (Kyle Soller).

At the center of the unfolding plot is Frank Harkness, who is working for right-wing TV magnate Damien Cantor (Harry Lloyd). Damien's objective is to secure a contract with Russian interests, and to prove his loyalty, he orchestrated the theft of a critical file from Slough House by Reece Nesmith. However, Damien claims he was not directly involved in ordering the subsequent killings of Slough House agents; his role was to facilitate the cover-up of the document theft. This suggests Damien passed the stolen file to a Russian contact, possibly linked to the GRU (Russia's intelligence agency), who then used the information for retaliation. This retaliation may be a response to actions taken by Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) of MI5, specifically a botched assassination attempt in Kazan, Russia, designed to look like a robbery. River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) suspects Diana may have impersonated Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) to take responsibility for the failed operation, potentially explaining why Sid would be targeted.

Diana Taverner finds herself implicated further as she engages in a phone conversation with Vassily Rasnokov, her GRU counterpart. They negotiate the fate of their agents, with Diana agreeing to allow Sid to be harmed by Russian assassins in exchange for the GRU ceasing their attacks on Slough House personnel. This development is particularly devastating for Sid, who has been trying to contact Diana despite River's warnings against trusting her. The episode concludes with Jim and Jane kidnapping Sid at gunpoint.

The episode juggles numerous plot threads, including Reece's attempt to blackmail Frank, a group of women finding refuge in what appears to be Diana's holiday home, and the death of J.K. Coe. While Coe's demise in a bathroom confrontation can be seen as a heroic act in defending his colleagues, the sheer volume of significant plot points packed into a single episode detracts from the overall pacing, especially after a more tightly structured previous installment.

With only two episodes remaining in the season, 'Lost and Found' attempts to provide answers to the season's central mysteries. However, the density of the revelations can feel overwhelming, presenting a challenge for viewers to fully process the unfolding narrative in an enjoyable manner.
