Sony is reportedly in negotiations to secure the rights for a film adaptation of Electronic Arts' long-running Battlefield video game series. According to Variety, Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on the Mission: Impossible films, is attached to write, direct, and produce the project. Michael B. Jordan is also on board as a producer.
While Jordan is attached to produce, Variety notes that his potential involvement as a star in the film is still dependent on several factors. Sony has declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations, which are said to have emerged from a competitive bidding situation involving multiple studios.
Several other producers are involved, including Jesse Stern for EA, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo, and Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society. The Battlefield franchise first launched in 2002, and its most recent mainline installment, Battlefield 6, was released last year. It reportedly became the franchise's best-selling first-person shooter to date, outselling Call of Duty.
This move by Sony comes as other major franchises are also making their way to the big screen. Paramount is developing a Call of Duty film with director Peter Berg and a script by Taylor Sheridan, slated for a June 2028 release. Battlefield itself recently introduced Rapid Royale, a faster-paced game mode on smaller maps with respawn mechanics, drawing parallels to Warzone's Resurgence.
