Star Trek: The Original Series is set to receive a new box set in commemoration of its 60th anniversary, with release dates confirmed for September 8.
The collection will be available in three versions: a DVD set priced at $101.99, a standard Blu-ray set for $104.99, and an Amazon Exclusive Edition for $139.99. All editions feature the series' complete 79-episode run, remastered in 1080p with updated visuals and original audio. The sets also include over nine hours of bonus features.
The Amazon Exclusive Edition offers additional collector's items, such as a 4-inch vinyl featuring the show's original theme music, limited-edition lobby cards, and distinctive new packaging.
However, the announcement has been met with mixed reactions from fans. Some reviews on Amazon have noted that this new release may contain less content than a previous 50th-anniversary collection. That earlier set, released a decade ago, included the original series, the first six films, and Star Trek: The Animated Series for $208.99. While more expensive, some fans expressed a desire for a similar comprehensive offering.
Additionally, there is disappointment that the new release is presented in 1080p rather than an upscaled 4K format.
This release comes at a time when the Star Trek franchise has seen several series conclude. Star Trek: Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Discovery all ended in 2024. The straight-to-streaming film Star Trek: Section 31, released on January 24, 2025, received largely negative reviews from both critics and audiences. Currently, only Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy are actively airing, with the former's fourth season set to premiere on July 23 and the latter's final season scheduled for 2027. Beyond these, no further Star Trek television or film projects have been fully announced.
The future of the franchise also faces uncertainty following the cancellation of a planned fourth Star Trek film starring Chris Pine and a shift in Paramount's management.
