The planned live-action television series based on the iconic video game franchise System Shock will not be moving forward. Stephen Kick, CEO of Nightdive Studios, confirmed the cancellation in a recent interview, stating that the company they were collaborating with, Binge, appears to be defunct.
"The company we were working with, they had also licensed the rights to a number of other video game properties," Kick told FRVR. "I don’t believe that company is still around [in that form]. So that won’t be happening through Binge."
Preliminary scripts for the System Shock series were developed, and Kick engaged in conversations with the screenwriters. However, the project stalled before progressing beyond these initial stages. Kick expressed his continued enthusiasm for a potential System Shock adaptation, whether for television, streaming, or film, believing it to be a "perfect vessel" with numerous creative possibilities.
Binge had reportedly secured rights for adaptations of other game titles, including Driver and Hunt: Showdown. The Driver series was officially canceled in 2024. While the status of the Hunt: Showdown series remains officially unconfirmed, its development is likely also stalled given Binge's apparent inactivity. The streaming platform's website shows little recent activity, and its last social media post in April 2024 was an advertisement for a Web3 gaming convention in Dubai.
