ABC's 49-episode science fiction anthology series, The Outer Limits, is now available to stream for free on Tubi. Created by Leslie Stevens, the show emerged in the 1960s as ABC's response to the immense success of CBS's The Twilight Zone.
Both series featured high-concept, standalone narratives with different casts and premises each week, often exploring science fiction themes with underlying human messages and irony. While The Twilight Zone opened with Rod Serling famously inviting viewers to "another dimension," The Outer Limits adopted its own distinct introductory monologue from announcer Vic Perrin: "There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission." Perrin's closing remarks promised viewers "the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits."
Despite its initial perception as an imitation, The Outer Limits developed its own unique identity. The series boasted notable writers such as Harlan Ellison and Joseph Stefano, the screenwriter for Psycho. Its episodes introduced original and thought-provoking concepts, including "The Architects of Fear," which depicted scientists staging a fake alien invasion to unite humanity, and "The Sixth Finger," about a man rapidly evolving with extraordinary powers. The series also pushed boundaries with its makeup and creature effects for the era.
The show's debut in the fall of 1963 coincided with the fifth season of The Twilight Zone. While The Twilight Zone had expanded to an hour-long format in its fourth season, a move often considered its weakest, The Outer Limits, returning to a half-hour structure, found significant initial success. However, a move to Saturday nights for its second season saw a decline in ratings, leading to its cancellation midway through its sophomore run.
The legacy of The Outer Limits continued with a successful revival in the 1990s, which ran for seven seasons, a longevity that its predecessor, The Twilight Zone, has not matched with its own revivals. The series also gained notoriety when director James Cameron's film The Terminator was accused of plagiarizing Ellison's 1964 Outer Limits episode, "The Soldier." This resulted in a settlement and a co-writing credit for Ellison on future releases of the film.
