Fans of Tim Burton's distinctive gothic aesthetic will have cause to celebrate this September with the upcoming 4K steelbook releases of two of his acclaimed films: "Sleepy Hollow" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." While "Sleepy Hollow" is a reprint of a previous steelbook edition, this marks the first time "Sweeney Todd" will receive the special edition treatment.
"Sleepy Hollow," released in 1999, is a gothic horror film inspired by Washington Irving's 1820 short story. The movie stars Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane, who is dispatched to the eerie village of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of mysterious decapitations. There, he becomes entangled with Katrina Van Tassel, portrayed by Christina Ricci.
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," a 2007 adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical, also features Johnny Depp in the titular role. He is joined by Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett. The film chronicles Sweeney Todd's quest for vengeance against the corrupt Judge Turpin, who orchestrated his wrongful imprisonment and separation from his family.
Both limited-edition 4K steelbooks are set to retail for $34.99 and will include multiple bonus features. The "Sleepy Hollow" steelbook comes with two discs, featuring the full film and a second disc dedicated to bonus content, including commentary from director Tim Burton, a behind-the-scenes look titled "Behind The Legend," and "Reflections on Sleepy Hollow."
The "Sweeney Todd" steelbook also contains two discs with the feature film and a collection of supplementary material. These extras include "Todd: A behind-the-scenes look at the collaboration of Tim Burton with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter," "Sweeney Todd press conference," "Sweeney Todd is Alive: The Real History of the Demon Barber," "Musical Mayhem: Sonhem's Sweeney Todd," "Sweeney's London," "The Making of Sweeney Todd," "Grand Guignol: A Theatrical Tradition," "Designs for a Demon Barber," "A Bloody Business," "Moviefone Unscripted with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp," and "The Razor's Refrain Photo Gallery."
Given the collectible nature of steelbook editions, particularly those featuring popular cult classics, interested buyers are advised to secure their copies promptly, as these releases are known to sell out quickly.
