The United States Mint has launched the Comic Art Coin & Medal Program, a historic initiative that brings iconic DC superheroes to official U.S. coinage. This marks the first time in the Mint's 230-year history that such characters will appear on its products.
The program features original artwork created specifically for the collection, with each design meticulously sculpted by hand and struck in precious metal. This approach ensures unique artistic interpretations rather than reproductions of existing comic panels.
Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman were the first to be featured in 2025. The series continues in 2026 with Supergirl, Robin, and Green Lantern, and will conclude in 2027 with three additional heroes, completing a lineup of nine distinct characters.
Each coin and medal is brought to life by Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna, who designs and sculpts the obverse sides. The reverse designs are created by the Mint's Medallic Artists under Menna's artistic guidance. The collection is available in 24-karat gold coins and 99.9% fine silver medals, as well as three-medal sets that pair trios of DC legends. Values such as hope, strength, justice, courage, peace, equality, fearlessness, loyalty, and honor, which are central to these characters, are also values that the U.S. Mint has historically represented in its coinage.
