Prime Video has set a January 20, 2027 premiere date for Bloodaxe, a new historical action series from Michael Hirst, the creator of Netflix's acclaimed Vikings. The eight-episode first season will be released all at once.
The series, which has already been renewed for a second season and is currently filming in Ireland, offers a new look into the Norse world. The plot centers on Erik Bloodaxe, a Norse raider portrayed by Xavier Molyneux, as he fights to seize the throne of Norway alongside his wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, played by Jessica Madsen. Their ambition ignites conflicts with rulers across Scandinavia and an English king, weaving a narrative of political intrigue and violent power struggles.
Bloodaxe draws upon the history and legends of the Viking age, much like Hirst's previous work. His original series Vikings ran for six seasons on Netflix from 2013 to 2020, followed by its sequel, Vikings: Valhalla, on which Hirst also served as an executive producer.
The first teaser trailer for Bloodaxe was unveiled during a panel at New York Comic Con, where Hirst, co-showrunner Horatio Hirst, and cast members Molyneux, Madsen, and Levi Miller discussed the project. The series also features Karlis Arnots Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte, and Jesper Christensen. Production for the second season is underway.
