What to Watch: New Movies Arrive on Streaming This Weekend

As September draws to a close, a selection of notable films are now available on streaming services and Video on Demand. This weekend offers a range of genres, from family animation to intense horror and comedy.

Toy Story 5

Available on Disney+, Toy Story 5 focuses on Jessie and her relationship with Bonnie as the young girl navigates the complexities of technology. The film has been praised for its thoughtful and emotional storytelling, offering an improvement over its predecessor.

While the movie doesn’t quite reach the heights of the first three films, it is a thoughtful, funny, emotional entry into the franchise that improves upon Toy Story 4 in every way. And while I still kinda think the franchise should have concluded with Toy Story 3, I no longer fear and resent future Toy Story movies. Toy Story 5 is so good, and puts the characters in such a good place, that it changed my whole mentality on the matter.

Backrooms

Based on Kane Parsons' popular YouTube series, Backrooms is now available on HBO Max. This horror film delves into the unnerving concept of liminal spaces and the psychological impact they have on individuals, particularly an unfulfilled manager portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor. The movie has been noted for its lingering unease and suspense.

The expansion of Parsons’ series of YouTube shorts (the most popular of which has been viewed more than 78 million times) is deeply unnerving. Better yet, it’s haunting. In a spectacle-based film environment where it’s easy to forget most of the movies we watch before we’ve even left the theater, Backrooms leaves lingering shivers and ongoing anxieties. It’s smart, “elevated” horror for the tired-of-slashers crowd, but it has plenty of slasher shocks as well. The best recent comparison is Zach Cregger’s Weapons, another deeply frightening movie also built around excavating the uncanny, without unpacking all its mysteries.

Tuner

This thriller is available on Paramount+. Tuner stars Leo Woodall as Niki, a piano tuner with exceptional hearing who becomes entangled in safecracking after his mentor falls ill.

Spa Weekend

Available on VOD, Spa Weekend is a comedy featuring Michelle Buteau, Anna Faris, Isla Fisher, and Leslie Mann. The film follows three childhood friends whose reunion getaway at a luxury spa takes a chaotic turn when an unexpected guest arrives.

The Love Hypotheses

This romance, based on a popular novel, is available on Prime Video. The Love Hypotheses centers on a PhD student played by Lili Reinhart who enters into a fake dating agreement with her professor, portrayed by Tom Bateman, leading to genuine feelings.

The Deputy

The Deputy, a thriller starring Duke Nicholson, William H. Macy, and Julia Fox, is now available. The story follows a rookie deputy who investigates the disappearance of a dead body he was guarding, uncovering a local conspiracy.

Unabomber

Netflix is now streaming Unabomber, a drama that chronicles the life of Ted Kaczynski, played by Jacob Tremblay. The film examines his journey from a Harvard prodigy to the perpetrator of infamous mail bombings.

The Furious

Labeled as a standout martial arts film, The Furious is available on Starz. The action movie follows a mute handyman seeking retribution after his daughter is abducted by a child trafficking syndicate.

Polygon's recommendation states:

Put simply, The Furious scores five out of five OMFGs. It is, dare I say, the best action movie of 2026 and maybe the past 50 years. (I weigh pre-’70s action movies on a different scale.) It’s a nonstop, ceaseless barrage of the most inventive, visceral, mind-bending action sequences that have ever been put to screen. Every punch feels like it’s going to shatter the space-time continuum.

The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner, a comedy starring Nate Bargatze and Mandy Moore, is available on Netflix. The film explores the challenges faced by a car salesman who becomes a stay-at-home dad.

Jackass: Best and Last

Paramount+ features Jackass: Best and Last, the latest installment from Johnny Knoxville and his crew. This entry promises a mix of new stunts and a look back at their most memorable moments from the franchise's history.
