IO Interactive has announced a significant delay for the Nintendo Switch 2 version of its acclaimed James Bond game, 007 First Light. The game, which was initially anticipated for a summer release, has now been pushed back to March 2027. The studio stated that the extended development period will be dedicated to polishing the game and optimizing its performance specifically for the Switch 2 hardware.
This delay comes as a surprise, particularly after the game was recently playable on the Switch 2 at Gamescom, with the studio also preparing to showcase the same demo at the Tokyo Game Show. IO Interactive had not provided an official release date beyond a general intention for a summer launch. However, a listing on Amazon Japan in late July suggested a September 16th release, a date that has now passed.
"We know many of you have been looking forward to experiencing Bond's reimagined origin story on Nintendo Switch 2, and we greatly appreciate your enthusiasm," IO Interactive said in a post on X. "To ensure we deliver the quality of experience players expect, we have made the decision to delay the release to March 2027, with the exact date to be communicated later. This additional time will go toward polishing the Nintendo Switch 2 performance of the game."
The studio also noted the positive reception at Gamescom. "We were thrilled by the positive feedback on 007 First Light at Gamescom, and it's a great sign of the progress being made across the whole game as we head toward launch," the statement continued. "We will share further updates as soon as we are ready. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support."
007 First Light launched in May and has achieved considerable success, selling over 4 million copies across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In a review, 007 First Light was praised for its action-packed spectacle and its successful adaptation of the James Bond license, with commentary suggesting IO Interactive is well-suited to develop modern Bond games.
