IO Interactive's James Bond game, 007 First Light, was originally conceived with a more ensemble-focused narrative, according to lead writer Michael Vogt. The initial concept would have seen Bond working alongside a team of fellow agents rather than as the sole protagonist.
Traces of this original vision remain in the game's early stages. Players are introduced to MI6's newly restarted double-O program, with Bond among several hopeful agents. The game features Bond ingratiating himself with these trainees in Malta and even sharing a flat in London with fellow agents Cressida and Monroe, with whom he forms a close bond. The camaraderie and friendly rivalry among these agents during training and an early mission to Slovakia were well-received by players, adding warmth and fun to the experience.
However, 007 First Light ultimately pivoted away from this ensemble approach. "During the training sequence, we make a false promise," Vogt explained. "Basically we're saying this is going to be an ensemble piece, all the double-Os working together, as they do in Slovakia. And then we pull the rug out from under you when most of them die, and serendipitously, [Bond's] the last man standing."
The shift in narrative focus served a specific storytelling purpose. Vogt noted that the change allowed the game to move from a lighter, adventurous tone to a more serious one, reflecting the harsh realities of espionage. This pivot was intended to mature Bond, showing his transition from a young agent on an adventure to someone grappling with survivor's guilt after a catastrophic explosion. This dramatic event forces him to confront the short life expectancy of agents, a lesson emphasized by M.
This tonal shift also influenced the game's genre, moving slightly from a straight spy thriller towards action-adventure. Vogt mentioned dialing up the comedy, charm, and spark to keep the game aspirational, ensuring Bond retained a sense of bright-eyed wonder despite the unfolding events.
Despite the narrative's darker turns, Vogt does not believe Bond becomes jaded by the end of the game. Instead, he matures and influences those around him, facilitating Greenway's redemption arc and making Isola more humane. Vogt sees Bond as a character who subtly shifts and inspires change in others rather than undergoing dramatic personal transformations.
Following a strong critical reception, including a four-star review from Eurogamer and significant sales, a future for IO Interactive's Bond is suggested. However, Amazon's ownership of the James Bond franchise introduces a new dynamic to future installments. 007 First Light was self-published by IO Interactive, but the studio has recently faced layoffs and office closures after a publishing deal for Project Fantasy was canceled.
In the interim, IO Interactive is developing DLC for 007 First Light. This includes a story-led adventure set shortly after the game's events, which will revisit the character Bawma and the location Aleph for a new mission.
