IO Interactive has announced that its James Bond title, 007 First Light, has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. The developer shared the sales figures via social media, expressing gratitude to players for their support. This milestone arrives just under three months after the game's initial release.
The last reported sales figure for 007 First Light was 2.7 million units, achieved just over a week after its launch. This continued success provides a positive counterpoint for IO Interactive, which has recently faced layoffs attributed to the cancellation of a Microsoft Xbox publishing contract for its other project, Project Fantasy.
The strong performance of 007 First Light also bolsters the possibility of a future sequel. However, Amazon, the new owner of the James Bond intellectual property, has indicated a desire for greater involvement in any future game adaptations. 007 First Light was self-published by IO Interactive.
007 First Light, which chronicles the early training of a rookie James Bond within MI6's newly reinstated double-oh program, was met with critical acclaim. Many praised it as a successful adaptation of the iconic spy franchise, with some reviews highlighting its narrative strength.
Development insights shared by IOI have revealed that the game was initially conceived as a more ensemble-focused experience. The studio also noted the character of John Greenway, whom they felt allowed for a celebration of British "restrained emotion."
A version of 007 First Light for the Nintendo Switch 2 is also reportedly in development.
