Development on the Nintendo Switch version of IO Interactive's James Bond origin story, "007 First Light," is progressing well, with the game on track for a summer release. While the game launched on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation in late May, the Switch version was intentionally delayed to ensure optimal performance across all platforms.
IO Interactive has not yet provided a specific release date for the Switch port, but the studio indicated a "later this summer" timeframe. Senior licensing producer Theuns Smit stated that optimization efforts are seeing "really good progress" and that development is "charging ahead." Smit emphasized the studio's commitment to dedicating sufficient time to optimization and performance tuning to meet both internal quality standards and player expectations.
"007 First Light" marks the first James Bond game in over a decade, casting players as a younger, more impetuous James Bond. The gameplay blends stealth, combat, and charm, drawing comparisons to IOI's "Hitman" series while offering a more action-oriented experience that includes driving sequences. The game has achieved significant commercial success, with IOI revealing that it sold 2.7 million copies in its first week. Among the in-game statistics, wine bottles were found to be the most frequently used thrown item, accounting for 36 percent of all thrown projectiles. Players have initiated 34 million missions, with a 30 percent completion rate.
"007 First Light" has been met with positive reception, earning a four-star review from Eurogamer, which described it as less cerebral than IOI's "World of Assassination" trilogy but compensating with strong fistfights and considerable charm. IO Interactive also has notable post-release plans for the game.
