Nintendo's Switch Online service with the Expansion Pack offers a growing library of Game Boy Advance titles, but numerous acclaimed games from the handheld console are conspicuously absent. Here are 10 essential GBA games that deserve a spot on the service.
WarioWare: Twisted!
Released in 2004, WarioWare: Twisted! was the second and final entry in the GBA WarioWare series. It distinguished itself by incorporating motion controls, requiring players to twist the Game Boy Advance unit to complete its signature microgames. Despite its critical reception, this innovative title has yet to be added to Nintendo Switch Online.
Tales of Phantasia
The GBA port of Tales of Phantasia, released in 2003, provided players outside Japan their first opportunity to experience the inaugural entry in the long-running Tales RPG series. This action-RPG featured improved visuals over its Super Nintendo predecessor and included enhancements like a reduced enemy encounter rate and English voice acting. Its addition to Switch Online would introduce a classic JRPG to a new generation.
Drill Dozer
Developed by Game Freak, the studio behind Pokémon, Drill Dozer (originally Screw Breaker in Japan) launched in 2005. This unique platformer placed players in control of a young girl piloting a powerful drilling tank through colorful stages. The cartridge even included a built-in rumble feature to enhance the destructive gameplay. Nintendo's limited marketing for late GBA releases may have contributed to its initial obscurity.
Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland
This 2002 remake of the NES classic Kirby's Adventure enhanced the original with updated graphics, multiplayer capabilities for up to four players, and new mini-games. It also featured balance adjustments, including tougher boss encounters and clearer indications for hidden areas. Its inclusion on Switch Online would complement the already available Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.
Lufia: The Ruins of Lore
Set 20 years after Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals, this 2002 GBA title is a side story in the Lufia universe. The Ruins of Lore features turn-based combat with visible enemies on the map and allows players to recruit monsters. With remakes of Lufia 1 and 2 announced for 2027, adding this earlier installment to Switch Online would be a logical step.
Super Puzzle Fighter 2
Originally an arcade title from 1996, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo made its way to the GBA with its addictive block-matching puzzle gameplay. The game features chibi versions of Capcom's fighting game characters and offers a satisfying loop of clearing colorful falling blocks to trigger combo chains. While part of the Capcom Fighting Collection, its standalone GBA version is missing from Nintendo's service.
Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire
Developed by Jupiter Corporation, this 2003 GBA title blended the addictive nature of pinball with the charm of Pokémon. Featuring two distinct tables and unique modes like catching Pokémon, it offered a delightful twist on the classic arcade game. Its presence on the Game Boy Advance alongside other Pokémon spin-offs makes its absence from Switch Online notable.
Onimusha Tactics
Launched in 2003, Onimusha Tactics offers a strategic departure from the action-heavy main series. This GBA title presents tactical, grid-based combat, drawing comparisons to games like Fire Emblem. Despite its different gameplay style, it serves as a dark side story within the Onimusha universe and would be a fitting addition to the Switch Online library, especially with the recent revival of the franchise.
Mega Man & Bass
This action-platformer, originally released in Japan as RockMan & Forte in 1998, arrived in North America as a Game Boy Advance port five years later. Mega Man & Bass offered a greater challenge than many contemporary Mega Man titles and allowed players to choose between Mega Man and his agile rival, Bass, each with distinct abilities. Its relative rarity in compilations makes its inclusion on Switch Online a welcome prospect.
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis
Released in 2001 before Square acquired Quest, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis is a tactical RPG serving as a prequel to the Ogre Battle series. The game features intricate grid-based combat with environmental factors influencing battles, akin to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Its unavailability for over two decades makes it a prime candidate for addition to Nintendo Switch Online, especially given the recent Tactics Ogre: Reborn remake.
