The gaming landscape is littered with the ghosts of projects that never saw the light of day. Sometimes, these cancellations are minor footnotes, but other times, they represent the loss of potentially massive hits or the end of beloved series. Polygon has compiled a list of 10 devastating game cancellations that continue to disappoint.

StarCraft: Ghost

Originally announced in 2002, StarCraft: Ghost spent years in development before being placed on indefinite hold in 2006. Various factors contributed to its demise, including significant industry shifts and internal team changes. A major reason for its cancellation was the immense success of World of Warcraft, which led Blizzard to reallocate resources. Despite the understandable business decision, the loss of a potential shooter set in the StarCraft universe remains a point of regret.

Dead Space 4

Although never officially announced by Electronic Arts, Dead Space 4 was reportedly in development following the release of Dead Space 3. However, the sales performance of Dead Space 3 apparently fell short of EA's expectations. Consequently, the studio, Visceral Games, was redirected to focus on other projects, and development on Dead Space 4 ceased before any playable levels could be constructed. Visceral Games itself was later shut down in 2017.

Fable Legends

Fable Legends, a multiplayer action-RPG, was nearing its open beta phase when it was canceled in 2016. Developed by Lionhead Studios, the game had been in development for roughly four years. Despite its near completion, the project was ultimately scrapped, leading to the closure of Lionhead Studios itself.

The California Raisins: The Grape Escape

This NES title was remarkably close to release, with promotional materials even appearing, before vanishing overnight. The cancellation is speculated to be due to the waning popularity of The California Raisins brand and Capcom's focus on other major releases, such as Mega Man 3. Fortunately, a prototype cartridge has since been discovered and its contents released online.

Star Wars Battlefront 3

Developed by Free Radical Design, Star Wars Battlefront 3 was reportedly near completion when LucasArts canceled the project in late 2008. Despite the cancellation, a nearly final build was said to exist. Leaked prototypes, including a fully playable Wii version in late 2024, have since offered glimpses into what the game might have been.

Scalebound

PlatinumGames' ambitious dragon-riding action RPG, Scalebound, was canceled by Microsoft in 2017. The game, announced at E3 2014, struggled with its development, partly due to issues with the Unreal Engine 4. The developer was unable to produce a stable, playable piece of software, leading to its cancellation.

Star Wars 1313

This action-adventure game focusing on Boba Fett was in development at LucasArts for about three years. Following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in late 2012, the project was canceled roughly six months later. The new ownership reportedly was not willing to fund the project's continuation.

Sleeping Dogs 2

Despite Sleeping Dogs achieving over 1 million sales, Square Enix did not greenlight a direct sequel. United Front Games then proposed a follow-up that would expand on the story and include cooperative play. Square Enix instead encouraged the development of Triad Wars, which also ultimately met a similar fate, being shut down after a beta phase. This marked the end of the line for both United Front Games and the Sleeping Dogs franchise.

Silent Hills

The collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, intended to revive the Silent Hill franchise, was canceled by Konami in 2015, just eight months after its reveal as the playable teaser P.T. Kojima subsequently left Konami. While Konami has since announced new Silent Hill projects, the original vision for Silent Hills remains lost.

Mega Man Legends 3

Announced for the Nintendo 3DS in 2010, Mega Man Legends 3 involved community feedback in its development. However, Capcom canceled the project in 2011, shortly after the departure of producer Keiji Inafune. A demo was reportedly in development but never released, leaving the cliffhanger from Mega Man Legends 2 unresolved.
