The Nintendo GameCube, with its distinctive purple design and built-in handle, was a console that prioritized technical prowess while also delivering some of the era's finest gaming experiences. Despite its strengths, several unique and rewarding titles didn't achieve the widespread recognition they deserved at the time. Fortunately, these games are now accessible, offering a chance for players to discover or revisit them.
Developed by Sonic Team, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg presented players with a quirky premise involving moving giant eggs through puzzling stages filled with hazards. While it didn't achieve mainstream success, its unique mechanics offered an enjoyable experience for those who approached it with the right mindset. Another title that slipped under the radar was Capcom's Gotcha Force. This game provided compelling 3D shooting action, tasking players with building a formidable fighting force of toys to use in competitive matches. Though its arcade style and camera might not appeal to everyone, it offers a satisfying competitive experience reminiscent of games like Power Stone.
Before FromSoftware became synonymous with the Dark Souls series, the studio explored various genres, including the action-adventure game Lost Kingdoms. Launched as Rune in Japan, the game followed Katia through a fog-covered kingdom, battling monsters with a deck of magical cards. Its strong visuals and real-time card-based combat encouraged innovative strategies, and the ability to modify cards added another layer of depth. The game saw a sequel but the series ultimately faded.
Chibi-Robo!, developed by Skip Ltd., is an adventure game where players control a small robot tasked with spreading happiness and collecting points in various environments. While the Chibi-Robo! series had an uneven trajectory, concluding with the less well-received Chibi-Robo!: Zip Lash, the original GameCube title remains a charming and offbeat experience. It is also available on Nintendo Switch Online. Similarly, Skies of Arcadia Legends, an enhanced port of the Dreamcast RPG, offered stunning sky-world visuals and engaging turn-based combat featuring airships. This classic adventure with its pirate crew has yet to be re-released on modern platforms.
Custom Robo, a franchise developed by Noise Inc. and published by Nintendo, offered players miniature war machines in virtual arenas. With customizable parts and weapons, battles could be viewed from first or third-person perspectives. The game's story mode, 'A New Journey,' rewarded players with new options, making for a satisfying and unique experience. A more unconventional title, Odama, blended pinball mechanics with real-time strategy. Utilizing a microphone peripheral for voice commands to direct troops, players controlled giant flippers via the standard controller to navigate a battlefield and defeat enemies. The game was produced by Yoot Saito, known for Seaman.
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, co-developed by Monolith Soft and tri-Crescendo, combined an epic RPG narrative with beautiful graphics and complex turn-based battles that incorporated collectible cards. It was a substantial and visually impressive RPG for the GameCube. Fortunately, this game and its prequel, Baten Kaitos Origins, were remastered and released as Baten Kaitos 1 & 2 HD Remaster for Nintendo Switch in 2023 and for Windows PC in 2024.
Nintendo also ventured into M-rated territory with Geist, an FPS developed by n-Space. Players control John Raimi, who gains spectral abilities allowing him to possess objects and enemies. This gameplay mechanic enabled creative problem-solving and combat scenarios, further enhanced by inventive local multiplayer modes. Finally, Cubivore: Survival of the Fittest, originally slated for Nintendo publication, found its way to players via Atlus. This unique game features players controlling a cube-shaped creature that evolves by consuming other monsters. Strategic decision-making regarding evolution and a 'mating' mechanic for offspring added depth to the survival gameplay. Although visuals may appear dated, its distinct design and strategic elements make it a standout title.
