14 Horror Games To Wishlist From The Latest Showcase

The Horror Game Awards recently held its Harvest of Terror showcase, highlighting over 100 horror games, with a particular focus on 14 titles that caught the eye. This event follows the Midsummer Night's Scream showcase from June and offers a fresh batch of potential wishlisting candidates for horror fans.

Several titles offer unique twists on established horror tropes. Confronted, already available with a demo, draws comparisons to Amnesia: The Dark Descent but incorporates base-building elements. Signal Veil presents a Silent Hill-esque experience where a teenager uses a flip phone as a tool for puzzle-solving and combat within a haunted school. The Road of Dust and Sorrow, a 2D pixel art game, evokes a The Last of Us demake feel, tasking players with protecting a daughter in a world overrun by the undead.

Ambition is evident in The Pines, a third-person horror RPG from a new studio where player choices significantly impact the narrative. Sombras: Negative Frames, while described as "light" on horror, centers on a student lost in a dark reflection of her hometown, utilizing photographic elements. The standalone version of the popular Half-Life 2 mod, Nightmare House, is also in development, rebuilt from the ground up.

Artistic direction varies widely across the selected games. I Shall Name The Dead features a striking blue and orange art style for its story about exploring a graveyard after dark. Human.exe delves into philosophical horror, tasking players with guiding an AI through ethical dilemmas and shaping its worldview. Sparrow offers a unique premise, casting players as a bird searching for her lost young.

Nostalgic aesthetics are present in Solace Creek, an indie title with a PSX-style presentation that blends eerie and comforting moods. Mayfly drops players into a shifting reality on a boat in England, searching for a missing husband. Echograph takes clear inspiration from the Fatal Frame series, featuring similar gameplay mechanics where players 'shoot' ghosts with a camera.

Other games leverage photographic elements for their scares. Shutter Story involves examining photos for paranormal activity, a concept reminiscent of the horror film Sinister. Dead of Darkness 2, a sequel featuring retro-style anime cutscenes, is also on the horizon, appealing to fans of its predecessor.

The next major event for The Horror Game Awards is scheduled for November 20, 2026.
