Scottish grandmother Cath Bowie, at 78 years old, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest female streamer of Fortnite. Bowie began playing the popular battle royale game in 2017 under the username grumpygran1948, accumulating a following of more than 24,000 fans.
She was initially introduced to Fortnite by her grandson, who, according to Bowie, doubted her ability to succeed or attract an audience. "As a young guy he just couldn't believe that his grandma would do such a thing and suggested that nobody would join me or watch me," Bowie told Guinness World Records. She described his skepticism as a challenge, stating, "Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it."
Bowie's primary motivation in the game is not necessarily achieving Victory Royales but rather the act of eliminating other players. "The one thing I do like, you see—this is me and my challenging nature—is to go in and eliminate folk," she explained in a BBC interview. Her enjoyment of the game, characterized by the sound of gunfire and defeating opponents, has persisted for nine years.
"The most important thing of all is that in all these years I have continued to enjoy every day, every week, every month and every year that I have played and streamed," Bowie stated. She also expressed gratitude for the support from her family and the friends she has made through the game.
Bowie encourages others who may feel limited by age to pursue their interests, offering the message, "Never let age stop you. If I can do it, so can you."
