Capcom has announced Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR, a virtual reality adaptation of the fifth mainline game in its courtroom adventure series. The game is slated for release on Meta platforms in 2027. This VR version promises a more interactive experience, allowing players to pick up and inspect evidence, examine environments in first-person, and utilize gestures and voice commands during cross-examinations, including the ability to shout "Objection!"
While players will engage with the world from a first-person perspective for certain actions, courtroom dialogue and character interactions will largely retain a third-person view, showcasing the series' signature character animations. The game is expected to launch on Meta Quest 3S, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 2. Amata K.K. is handling development for the title.
This announcement comes as a surprise to many, particularly given the recent release of the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection and the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. With most previous titles now accessible on modern platforms, the expectation among fans was for a new mainline entry in the series, such as Ace Attorney 7.
Concerns have been raised about the suitability of Ace Attorney's gameplay loop for VR. The series predominantly features text-heavy dialogue, and the prospect of extended play sessions in a VR headset solely for reading text has been met with skepticism. The developer, Amata K.K., is not Capcom, leading to speculation that this project will not impede the development of future traditional Ace Attorney titles. Dual Destinies was chosen for its status as the series' first foray into 3D graphics, making it a logical starting point for a VR adaptation, despite it not being the most critically acclaimed entry in the series. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is cited as a stronger standalone game, but Dual Destinies' shorter length and inclusion of more iconic characters are seen as factors in its selection for this VR project.
