Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is currently available for 80% off on Steam, offering a substantial discount for players interested in the acclaimed aerial combat series. This sale comes as anticipation builds for Ace Combat 8, which is slated for release in October and has been described by some as potentially one of the year's best games.
For those new to the franchise, Ace Combat 7 provides a compelling entry point. Senior Editor Wes Fenlon noted that his first experience with the game, completed in May 2026 with over 22 hours logged, was highly enjoyable, drawing parallels to Star Wars: Squadrons in its approachable flight simulation mechanics.
The game distinguishes itself with a gloriously melodramatic tone, blending intricately modeled aircraft and a serious military interface with over-the-top cutscenes. These narrative moments often explore themes of reaching for the sky or mourning wartime strife, contributing to a unique and engaging experience. PC Gamer reviewer Phil Iwaniuk previously described the campaign as escalating from simple radar tower engagements to epic boss fights against impossible constructions and drone swarms.
Missions in Ace Combat 7 are designed to keep players engaged through unexpected twists and escalating objectives. While the core gameplay loop involves aerial maneuvers and missile lock-ons, the variety of mission scenarios, from assaulting space elevators to dogfighting elite pilots and confronting advanced drones, ensures a dynamic experience. Between missions, players can customize their aircraft, with a selection of jets offering different advantages for dogfighting or bombing runs. The hangar provides ample opportunity to admire the detailed aircraft models.
Despite the imminent release of Ace Combat 8, playing Ace Combat 7 is unlikely to diminish enthusiasm for the upcoming title. Instead, its dramatic flair is likely to further prepare players for more of the series' signature style. The current Steam deal, ending soon, includes a Top Gun Maverick DLC tie-in with several aircraft. Alternatively, base game keys can be found for a lower price from third-party retailers like Fanatical, which offers an 86% discount for a limited time.
