Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve brand director Kazutoki Kono revealed that the character Tasha Severskaya became the development team's "most expensive character" due to the extensive time spent refining her design. Kono made these remarks during a group interview following a hands-on demo event in China.
Tasha, a pink-haired pilot formerly of Yuktobania's acrobatic team Zvezda, has garnered significant attention from future players even before the game's release. Originally intended for publicity footage aboard the vessel Endurance, she was integrated into the Joker Flight squad due to the ongoing conflict. Kono expressed surprise at Tasha's popularity on social media, admitting his personal preference for Lieutenant Commander Kate Evans, leader of Queen Flight.
According to Kono, Tasha's development started early in the project, with a different artist initially handling her design. The team continuously modified various aspects of her character, story, and overall presentation to achieve a satisfactory result, making her the most prolonged development effort. "That's why inside the development team, we jokingly call her 'the most expensive character,'" Kono stated, as reported by Invenglobal.
Kono attributes Tasha's appeal to her unique fashion sense and how her style, particularly her pink hair and distinct take on military attire, aligns with current popular trends. "I think elements like her personality, outfit, and especially her sense of fashion in wearing military attire so uniquely happened to fit current trends well, which contributed to all the attention she received," he explained.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is scheduled to launch on October 2, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. The game's multiplayer features were also discussed, with plans for 100-player lobbies, diverse mission types, and a co-op warfare mode.
