Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is set to feature robust online multiplayer experiences, including customizable pilot characters and dedicated airbase lobbies where players can interact. Bandai Namco unveiled these details in an "Online 101" video, showcasing how players will create their unique "pilotsona" through a selection of facial features and core elements. These pilots can then gather in a shared online space, using emotes to communicate and engaging in activities like playing Pac-Man in an in-game arcade.

The multiplayer modes center around two core offerings. Co-Op Assault is a player-versus-environment mode where two teams of four pilots compete to achieve the highest score by defeating NPC forces within a set time limit. Co-Op Warfare introduces a player-versus-player element, retaining the score-chasing objective but with both teams dogfighting in the same airspace. In this mode, players increase their threat level by destroying NPC targets, which in turn yields more points. However, higher threat levels also mean that being shot down by an opponent awards them more points.

Beyond standard matches, players may encounter special, time-limited missions upon returning to the airbase. These include Scramble, a mode where a squad of players duels against NPC aces, and Emergency Sortie, which tasks players with destroying iconic colossal weapons from the Ace Combat series.

Progression in Ace Combat 8's multiplayer will unlock new aircraft, upgrade parts, and customization options for both pilots and jets. However, the game will also incorporate battle passes. Bandai Namco has stated that any aircraft included in the premium battle pass will be available for separate purchase after its season concludes, mitigating concerns about exclusive content being permanently locked away.
