Project Aces is set to elevate the Ace Combat series with an expanded multiplayer offering in Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, slated for release on October 2. Building on the considerable success of its predecessor, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, the development team aims to foster long-term player engagement through a comprehensive suite of online features.

Producer Manabu Shimomoto explained that the sustained popularity of Ace Combat 7 highlighted the importance of robust multiplayer for player retention. "Because Ace Combat 7 was really successful and became a long-tail title, we also identified that it's really critical for the players to be able to play for the long term," Shimomoto stated via translator. "So for that, to enable that, the online mode and environmental platform needs to be very solid."

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will feature 100-player online lobbies where players can customize pilot avatars and interact socially. Progression through missions will unlock additional options and expand one's aircraft hangar. The game will include a battle pass system, dubbed Ace Pass, with both free and premium tiers, alongside a supply shop offering cosmetic items with a crate-opening aesthetic.

The core multiplayer experience will be divided into two main pillars: Co-Op Assault and Co-Op Warfare. Co-Op Assault tasks two teams of four players with competing for the highest score in missions, functioning as live wingmen. Co-Op Warfare, conversely, pits teams of four against each other, augmented by allied land, air, and sea units. Both modes emphasize high scores, with escalating threat levels providing score multipliers, though downed players also contribute more points to the opposing team.

Shimomoto emphasized the inclusion of both player-versus-environment (PvE) and player-versus-player (PvP) options to cater to a wider audience. "There are some players who are not really big fans of playing against people, so PvE is really critical for those players," he said. "Whereas some players really enjoy a competitive environment, so [options for both players] is really critical."

Multiple aircraft roles will be available across these modes, including Fighters, Attackers, Multirole, and Electronic Warfare aircraft. Players can progress their chosen aircraft through dedicated tracks, mirroring the single-player campaign's progression system, with additional online-exclusive customizations also planned.

Beyond the primary modes, Project Aces is introducing special multiplayer events called Scramble and Emergency Sortie. Scramble involves teams of four facing off against a challenging NPC squad, while Emergency Sortie features encounters with iconic Ace Combat bosses and superweapons.

The game's lobby will serve as a social hub, featuring a jukebox with music from previous Ace Combat titles and an arcade offering a selection of classic Namco games, including Pac-Man. The developers confirmed that other Namco classics will be included, though specific titles were not disclosed.

This extensive multiplayer suite aims to provide compelling reasons for both existing fans and new players to engage with Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve for the long term.
