Activision is preparing to introduce a new sub-series to the Call of Duty franchise, moving beyond the consistent focus on Black Ops and Modern Warfare entries. This shift aims to address community desires for new experiences, according to Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl.
Speaking with The Game Business, Bahl explained that while past titles have offered variations in time settings and gameplay features, a distinct tonal shift is what players are seeking. "We've already stated that a future title is going to be a new sub-franchise, and we've already laid the groundwork," Bahl confirmed.
This announcement follows recent hints from Treyarch, the developer behind the Black Ops series, who teased that they are working on "something that nobody's ever experienced before." Additionally, reports suggest Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind 2021's Call of Duty: Vanguard, may be developing the 2027 installment, which could also usher in a new sub-series.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-ordering the game grants early access to the campaign starting October 16 and the DMZ mode on October 20.
