Activision Testers Vote to Authorize Strike Ahead of Modern Warfare 4 Launch

Unionized Activision Quality Assurance testers have voted to authorize a strike, with potential action planned just days before the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The union, Activision Quality Assurance United-CWA, formed in March 2024 and represents nearly 600 QA workers.

The testers cite stalled negotiations over critical issues including wages, accommodations, and worker protections, with concerns also raised about the use of AI and contract workers. Emily Danko, a bargaining committee member, stated, "Bargaining has been a long, exhausting process spanning over two years, with our committee making responsible moves while the company continues to stall on critical issues." She added, "Our members remain united and continue to mobilize, but we are exploring every option available to secure the fair contract we deserve."

Activision acknowledged the ongoing discussions, with a spokesperson saying, "Activision has been working in good faith with the CWA for the Central QA team and we have made meaningful progress on a number of issues." The company expressed a commitment to open dialogue and has proposed further meetings. "Our goal is a fair first contract that supports our QA team members and the long-term success of the business," the spokesperson added.

However, one tester described the situation as demanding fair pay and treatment after over two years of bargaining, while facing unrealistic counters and delays from the company. Concerns were also raised about inadequate accommodations and the constant threat of layoffs without sufficient protections.

The vote comes amid a broader period of uncertainty for Microsoft-owned studios, following significant layoffs announced earlier this year. The testers' push for improved conditions highlights ongoing labor disputes within the gaming industry.
