Marvel Studios has officially cast Adam Driver as the formidable mutant villain Mister Sinister for its upcoming X-Men film, slated for release on May 5, 2028. Driver, known for his role as Kylo Ren in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, will bring the complex character, also known as Nathaniel Essex, to the silver screen for the first time. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has reportedly pursued Driver for years before securing his commitment for the villainous role.

While details about the extent of Driver's involvement remain undisclosed, it is presumed his role will primarily be as the antagonist in this singular film, though future appearances are not ruled out. Mister Sinister is a character with a deep comic book history, dating back to his introduction in 1987's Uncanny X-Men #215. Nathaniel Essex, a Victorian-era geneticist obsessed with human evolution, was granted immortality by Apocalypse and developed a particular fascination with the genetic potential of Jean Grey and Scott Summers. His schemes often involved manipulating their lineage, including the creation of a clone of Jean Grey named Madelyne Pryor.

The path to bringing Mister Sinister to film has been a long one, with previous attempts to feature the character. Jon Hamm was once slated to portray Sinister in a post-credits scene for 2020's The New Mutants, a film that ultimately saw its scenes involving the character unfilmed. The Essex Corporation, Sinister's business front, was also teased in a post-credits sequence for 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, hinting at his influence within the X-Men universe.

The 2028 X-Men film is expected to feature Sadie Sink as Jean Grey and Kit Connor as Cyclops. The narrative will likely draw inspiration from the character's comic book origins, potentially exploring his fixation on the Summers-Grey lineage. Fans can get a glimpse of Mister Sinister's distinctive style and menacing presence in the animated series X-Men '97, specifically in the first season episode "Fire Made Flesh."
