Adamantium Finally Serves a Purpose in the MCU After Years of Dormancy

Adamantium, a metal long associated with the X-Men and their powerful characters, has finally been put to significant use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) thanks to the Disney Plus series VisionQuest. In the second episode, released on October 13, the assassin Paladin (Todd Stashwick) utilizes adamantium bullets to inflict damage on White Vision, marking the first substantial application of the indestructible metal in the MCU's primary timeline.

The Long Road to Adamantium's MCU Debut

The acquisition of Fox by Disney in 2019 granted Marvel Studios the rights to characters and properties previously held by Fox, including adamantium. However, its integration into the MCU narrative has been notably slow.

Adamantium's origins in Marvel Comics trace back to Avengers issue #66 in July 1969, where it was established as the material composing Ultron's outer shell. Its more famous association, however, is with Wolverine, whose skeleton and claws are coated in the metal. Wolverine's first appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181 in 1974, and his subsequent integration into the X-Men, cemented adamantium's connection to mutant lore, a connection that kept it largely separate from the MCU until the Fox acquisition.

While Deadpool & Wolverine features the metal prominently, much of its narrative unfolds outside the main MCU timeline. Prior to VisionQuest, its presence in the main MCU timeline was limited. In Captain America: Brave New World, it was revealed that adamantium is derived from the petrified remains of the Celestial Tiamut, discovered on what was once Tiamut's body, now an island in the Indian Ocean. President Thaddeus Ross described it as more indestructible than vibranium. Despite this introduction, the metal's role in Brave New World was minimal, with claims of its use by the criminal organization SERPENT and its member Copperhead remaining largely unsubstantiated within the film itself.

Adamantium's Impact in VisionQuest

The events of VisionQuest's second episode provide a clear and undeniable demonstration of adamantium's power. The bullets fired by Paladin are explicitly stated to be made of the metal and successfully damage Vision, whose vibranium-infused body had previously been impervious to conventional weaponry. This marks a pivotal moment, seven years after the Disney-Fox merger, where adamantium's unique properties are finally leveraged to create meaningful conflict and narrative progression within the MCU. Although wielded by a secondary antagonist, this utilization finally gives the legendary metal a concrete role in the ongoing saga.
