AI Could Never Make Tenebris Somnia, Says Developer Behind Live-Action Horror

Tenebris Somnia, a 2D retro survival horror game developed with live-action cutscenes, is pushing boundaries with its practical effects, according to its creators. "AI could never make Tenebris Somnia, let's just say that," stated Dave Oshry, CEO of publisher New Blood Interactive.

The game combines a classic 2D aesthetic for its gameplay with unsettling live-action sequences produced by an Argentinian film crew. These cutscenes feature makeup and effects so visceral that they evoke a sense of genuine horror, with one description comparing the experience to "playing through someone's nightmares."

One particular creature design involves a grotesque extra face beneath the protagonist's own, connected by a single mouth, highlighting the game's commitment to disturbing visuals achieved through practical means. This approach, the developers believe, is what sets the game apart from potential AI-generated content.

Beyond its horror elements, Tenebris Somnia focuses on survival mechanics that emphasize scarcity. Oshry explained that players will frequently find themselves with limited health and ammunition, often necessitating the use of makeshift weapons like wrenches or pipes. The narrative is also described as emotionally resonant, exploring themes relatable to difficult relationships and promising an experience that will evoke strong emotional reactions.

Tenebris Somnia is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026, and is available to wishlist on Steam.
