The airborne open-world game Atmosfar is set to launch into early access on October 29th. The game features a world of floating islands and multiple airship types for players to command.
Atmosfar casts players as inhabitants of humanity's final outpost on an alien planet, tasked with uncovering its fate. The core gameplay loop involves utilizing two primary types of airships: the Wasp and the Cloud Cruiser. The Wasp is a smaller, more agile vehicle that comes in three variants: Utility for deploying camps, Cargo for hauling scrap, and Striker for combat. The Cloud Cruiser serves as a mobile airbase, complete with landing pads, a hangar, and a lounge area for co-op play with up to three other players. This interplay between smaller scout ships and a larger mobile base has been compared to the relationship between the Seamoth and Cyclops in Subnautica.
The game's environments consist of lush, rounded floating islands set against cloud-filled skies. The visual style has been noted for its pleasant aesthetic, with elements like rounded mountains and forest canopies integrated elegantly into the sky. Players can expect to land on these islands, though the potential for stranding their Wasp on inclines is acknowledged.
Atmosfar's early access period is planned to last at least nine months, with the possibility of extension based on player numbers and content additions. During early access, the developers intend to introduce a third and final region, an additional Wasp variant, and expanded building options for the Cloud Cruisers. The development studio, Apog, also created the management simulation game Airport CEO, suggesting a shared design philosophy.
The early access launch will initially feature two distinct regions within the game world. The developers refer to players as "Vagabonds," a naming convention that, while potentially polarizing, is presented as a choice made by the studio.
