X-Men actor Alan Cumming has revealed that he did not fully grasp the narrative of the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday during his time on set. Cumming, known for his role as Nightcrawler in previous X-Men films, admitted that the complex plot was often beyond his immediate understanding, stating that he was primarily focused on executing his given actions rather than comprehending the overarching story.
Cumming elaborated on his on-set experience, noting that many of his scenes were filmed in isolation against a blue screen. This method left him uncertain about who he was supposed to be interacting with, as he often did not know who his scene partners were intended to be. This approach extended to a specific scene where he was required to lie on top of Florence Pugh's Black Widow character. However, Cumming clarified that it was actually Pugh's stunt double he was positioned on, and he later learned that Pugh herself had a similar interaction with his own body double.
During an interview, Cumming recounted an instance where a crew member attempted to explain the plot involving "giant robots," which Cumming believes refers to the Sentinels seen in the film's trailer. Despite the explanation, Cumming indicated that he wasn't particularly interested in the plot details, stating, "You know what, thank you so much, but just tell me where I point my, whatever I point. And I'll do that. Really, I just know I'm here to run around."
Avengers: Doomsday is set to feature the return of several actors from previous Fox X-Men films, including Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Ian McKellen as Magneto. Following this film and Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel Studios plans to introduce a new, younger X-Men team in a future film directed by Jake Schreier. The upcoming movie is expected to premiere on December 18.
