Alan Ritchson to Star in Helldivers Movie; Release Delayed to 2028

Alan Ritchson, known for his role as Reacher, has been officially cast as one of the titular Helldivers in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game. The movie's release date has been moved from November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028, according to a Sony Pictures press release.

Justin Lin, who directed several installments of the Fast & Furious franchise, remains attached to direct the project. Producing the film are Hutch Parker, Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions, and Lin's Perfect Storm Entertainment.

The Helldivers story follows an elite military unit tasked with defending the fictional Super Earth from alien threats. Ritchson is set to portray one of these soldiers, though his specific role within the narrative is yet to be revealed.

Reports of Ritchson's involvement had circulated earlier in the month, with Deadline indicating he was in talks for the lead. His casting now confirms these rumors.

The film was nearly cast with a different lead actor. Jason Momoa was initially slated to star in Helldivers but departed the project over the summer for undisclosed reasons.

Sony announced the Helldivers movie in January 2025. Its production has been met with some fan apprehension, particularly after it was revealed that director Justin Lin does not consider himself a gamer. However, the CEO of Arrowhead, the developer of Helldivers 2, has expressed confidence in Lin's vision for the IP, urging fans to allow the director creative freedom.

The Helldivers movie joins a growing slate of video game adaptations, including Legendary's upcoming Street Fighter film, scheduled for release on October 16.
