After a week of intense reader voting, PC Gamer has crowned Alien: Isolation the scariest game on PC. The survival horror title, developed by Creative Assembly, emerged victorious from a bracket of 16 nominated games.
Alien: Isolation faced stiff competition, ultimately defeating Amnesia: The Dark Descent in the final round. Throughout the tournament, it bested other notable horror titles such as SOMA, Darkwood, and Silent Hill 2. The game's relentless Xenomorph antagonist was frequently cited as a primary source of its terror.
Fraser, writing for PC Gamer, previously described the game as one that "completely destroys me, drenching me in sweat and causing me to take leave of my senses," noting it took him a decade to work up the courage to finish it.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent secured the runner-up position, having advanced through the bracket by defeating games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and F.E.A.R., and narrowly beating its spiritual successor, Amnesia: The Bunker. The original Amnesia, released in 2010, was a landmark PC horror game that instilled fear through environmental storytelling and psychological dread, with co-founder Thomas Grip stating their strategy was to "hint at things and then let the players build up an image in their head."
For those looking to experience the terror, Alien: Isolation is currently available for $10 on Steam, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent is priced at $4. The publication also recently conducted a poll to determine the best RTS unit of all time, which was won by a large tank.
