The Nintendo Switch version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite is now entirely unplayable for all users, including those who purchased the game. Developer Cold Iron Studios announced earlier this year that the cloud-dependent title would cease operations on August 5, a deadline that has now passed. The game was delisted from the Switch eShop and other digital storefronts prior to this shutdown.
While the cloud version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite is no longer accessible, the game remains playable on other platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, albeit in an offline capacity. The Switch edition's reliance on cloud streaming made it impossible to continue playing once the servers were shut down. This situation mirrors issues faced by other cloud-based games, such as the Kingdom Hearts titles, which are also slated for future shutdowns.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite originally launched in August 2021 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The cloud-based Switch version followed in April 2023. A sequel, Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, is scheduled for release in August on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with a Switch 2 version expected later in the year.
The permanent removal of access to purchased digital games, particularly those reliant on cloud infrastructure, has fueled frustration among players and raised broader questions about game preservation. As physical media continues to decline, the longevity of digital-only titles and cloud-streamed games becomes a significant concern for consumers.
Cloud gaming itself continues to gain traction within the industry. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently expressed his belief that the industry will largely shift to a "commercial streaming mode" within three years. He theorizes that increased adoption of cloud gaming could expand revenue streams by reaching a wider audience, potentially appealing to players deterred by the rising cost of console hardware. However, Zelnick also emphasized that for widespread cloud gaming adoption to succeed, low latency, reliable internet connections with generous or unlimited data caps are essential prerequisites.
