Eevee, the Normal-type Pokémon first introduced in Pokémon Red and Blue, has become an unofficial mascot for the franchise. Its ability to evolve into eight distinct forms, known as Eeveelutions, each with a different typing, allows for diverse battle strategies. Eeveelutions are also highly sought after in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, with some of the most valuable cards ranking among the most beautiful and coveted in the game's history.
While ranking these evolutions is subjective, this list considers their in-game performance and design.
Glaceon
Glaceon, the Ice-type evolution, is ranked last. Despite its elegant design and a formidable 130 base Special Attack stat, it draws the short straw. Glaceon debuted in Generation Four, requiring Eevee to level up near an Ice Rock in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Later games simplified this to using an Ice Stone.
Leafeon
Leafeon, the Grass-type evolution, holds the seventh spot. The choice between Glaceon and Leafeon is often debated, with Glaceon potentially being the more formidable offensive Pokémon due to its Special Attack and bulk. However, this ranking favors Leafeon. Notable Leafeon cards include the Alternate Art Leafeon V from Evolving Skies and the Galarian Gallery version of Leafeon VSTAR from Crown Zenith.
Flareon
Flareon, the Fire-type evolution, is placed sixth. As one of Eevee's original three evolutions, Flareon has historically been the weakest and least interesting. While its Pokémon TCG Jungle printing boasts excellent artwork, Flareon often struggles in video games. Its 130 base Attack stat is hampered by middling Speed and an underwhelming movepool. Its design is also less distinctive compared to other evolutions.
Sylveon
Sylveon, the Fairy-type evolution, comes in at fifth place. Debuting in Generation Six's Pokémon X and Y, Sylveon introduced the Fairy typing to Eevee's evolutionary line. It evolves from Eevee that has a high friendship level and knows a Fairy-type move. Sylveon's flowing ribbons and design make a compelling case for its adorableness.
Vaporeon
Vaporeon, the Water-type evolution, secures the fourth position. It boasts a high 130 base HP stat and a respectable 95 base Special Defense, making it one of the bulkiest Eeveelutions. Vaporeon's design, resembling an elegant fox-mermaid hybrid, is simple yet distinctive, cementing its place among Eevee's original trio.
Jolteon
Jolteon, the Electric-type evolution, is ranked third. As the fastest Eeveelution, Jolteon is a glass cannon with a 110 base Special Attack stat. However, it suffers from fragile physical defenses and a low HP stat. Its spiky, electric design is striking, and it offers an enjoyable battle experience, provided players manage its low durability.
Umbreon
Umbreon, the Dark-type evolution introduced in Generation Two's Gold and Silver, takes the second spot. It evolves from a highly friendly Eevee at night. Umbreon's sleek black design with glowing yellow rings and impressive defensive stats make it a perennial fan favorite. While its offensive capabilities are modest, its staying power and support options provide an intriguing battle style. Umbreon is also highly coveted in the Pokémon TCG, with cards like the Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art from Evolving Skies commanding high prices.
Espeon
Espeon, Eevee's Psychic-type evolution, is ranked first. Espeon boasts one of the most elegant and striking designs among the Eeveelutions. It is also a fearsome special attacker, with a 130 base Special Attack and 110 Speed, allowing it to outspeed and defeat many opponents. Its combination of speed, special attacks, and the useful Magic Bounce ability makes it a top-tier choice in battle.
