Amazon Luna has rolled out a new Remote Play feature, allowing players to join gaming sessions together regardless of their physical location. This update is a significant enhancement for the cloud gaming service, which is accessible to Prime subscribers and offers a catalog of games playable without dedicated console or PC hardware.
Previously, Luna's multiplayer games required participants to be in the same room. The Remote Play functionality extends this to Amazon Prime and Luna Premium subscribers, who can now invite up to seven other players to join their games. These invited players do not need an Amazon Prime subscription but will need to access Luna through its website or TV application. As with other cloud gaming services, the performance of Remote Play is contingent on the internet connections of all participants.
To coincide with the Remote Play launch, Amazon has also expanded Luna's game library with several new multiplayer-focused titles. King of Tokyo, a digital adaptation of the popular board game, and It's Quiz Time: Guinness World Records, a trivia game, are now available. Later in September, the service will add Bowling Mayhem and Cranium Planet. While these are new additions, the single-player titles Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora have also been added to the Luna Standard game lineup.
The introduction of Remote Play arrives at a challenging time for the cloud gaming sector. Notably, Xbox recently announced that Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be limited to 15 hours of cloud gaming per month, with additional charges for exceeding this limit. Amazon Luna's inclusive approach, bundling the service with Prime and adding the Remote Play feature, positions it as a more accessible option in the evolving cloud gaming landscape.
