Amazon's live-action adaptation of the popular 'God of War' video game series is reportedly preparing to recast the roles of Atreus and Thrud for its second season. This move appears to stem from a planned time jump following the first season, rather than any issues with the current actors.
Casting notices have surfaced for teenage versions of characters codenamed "Joshua" (Atreus) and "Ruth" (Thrud). Callum Vinson, who portrays a younger Atreus in the first season, is expected to be replaced by an older actor to reflect the passage of time between seasons, a narrative device similar to the progression seen between 'God of War' (2018) and 'God of War Ragnarök'.
Thrud, Thor's daughter, is played by child actor Island Austin in the initial season. Her role is expected to be expanded, as she does not appear in the 2018 game but is introduced in 'Ragnarök'. The casting calls suggest that the show may introduce more characters from the Norse pantheon earlier than they appeared in the games.
The casting descriptions outline the characters' evolving personalities and circumstances. Teenaged Joshua is described as empathetic, brave, and curious, eager to uncover his true identity after a perilous adventure with his father. His trusting nature, however, makes him vulnerable to manipulation. He will need to be comfortable with physical combat, including archery. Teenaged Ruth is characterized as wise beyond her years, confident, intelligent, and sarcastic, masking a vulnerability that can lead to vindictiveness. She shares a complex relationship with her parents but believes her grandfather, the king, will name her heir.
It remains unclear how Kratos actor Ryan Hurst's departure from the project, due to a bicep injury, will impact the production schedule. Amazon is planning to reshoot at least four episodes that Hurst had already filmed. The new actors stepping into the roles of Atreus and Thrud for future seasons will likely face a significant wait before their characters' storylines fully develop within the series.
