Amazon's Mass Effect Series Continues Development Amidst BioWare Closure

Amazon MGM Studios' adaptation of the Mass Effect universe is reportedly still in production, even after Electronic Arts' recent decision to close BioWare and cancel the in-development fifth installment in the RPG series. Sources speaking to IGN have confirmed that the Prime Video series remains on track, with all key creative personnel still attached.

The Mass Effect series was first announced to be in development in 2024. At that time, series executive producer Mike Gamble stated that the show would not be a direct adaptation of the games but would instead explore a new story set after the events of the original trilogy, emphasizing that Commander Shepard's narrative is the players' own. It remains unclear how Gamble's role, if any, will be affected by BioWare's closure, as he served as a crucial link between the studio and the production.

Showrunners Doug Jung, known for "The Cloverfield Paradox" and "Star Trek Beyond," and Daniel Casey, who worked on "F9: The Fast Saga," are continuing their involvement. Avi Arad, former head of Marvel Studios, and Karim Zreik, executive producer for "Jessica Jones," are also still part of the project. No release window has been announced for the Mass Effect series.

Amazon has several other video game adaptations in its pipeline, including a third season of "Fallout," a live-action "God of War" series starring Dave Bautista, a "Tomb Raider" series with Sophie Turner, and shows based on "Life is Strange" and "Wolfenstein."
