Amazon has begun the search for a new writer to spearhead its planned Stargate reboot for Prime Video, indicating continued interest in the franchise despite the cancellation of a series previously helmed by Stargate veteran Martin Gero. The initial reboot project was scrapped in June, but the current search suggests Amazon remains committed to reviving the sci-fi property.
The decision to cancel Gero's series reportedly stemmed from creative differences, with his approach allegedly catering too heavily to existing fans. Amazon is now said to be looking for a writer without prior Stargate experience to offer a fresh perspective that could appeal to a broader audience.
Gero, who had worked on Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, was initially brought on to showrun the reboot. While he is no longer attached to this particular project, he will continue to develop other content for Amazon.
The Stargate franchise originated with Roland Emmerich's 1994 film and expanded into multiple television series, including the long-running Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe. The franchise also saw a short-lived web series, Stargate Origins, in 2018. Amazon acquired the Stargate IP when it purchased MGM Studios in 2022, and has been exploring new ways to expand the universe.
