Amazon Game Studios has quietly delayed the upcoming Tomb Raider title, Catalyst, pushing its release from its previously anticipated 2027 window to 2028. The announcement was made by Jeff Gattis, Amazon Games' boss, in an interview with The Game Business on July 23.
This delay appears to stem from Amazon Game Studios' strategic decision to bolster its streaming service, Luna. Gattis stated that the company aims to build a distinct identity for Luna, one that is closely associated with major franchises like Tomb Raider and potentially James Bond, alongside other original content. "Ultimately, we want to build an identity with Luna, where we have a content portfolio that resonates with people, where they think, 'Oh gosh, that's the place that has Tomb Raider, and maybe Bond, and they have these other things,'" Gattis explained. "And that takes time to go build."
Catalyst is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, the same studio behind the other major Tomb Raider project, Legacy of Atlantis. Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original Tomb Raider game, was also recently delayed and is now slated for a February 12, 2027 release. Crystal Dynamics has faced recent challenges, experiencing its fourth round of layoffs in March 2026.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the fourteenth entry in the franchise, is envisioned as a sequel to 2008's Tomb Raider: Underworld. The game follows Lara Croft as she navigates the narrative consequences of a mythical cataclysm. Flying Wild Hog is co-developing Legacy of Atlantis, while Crystal Dynamics remains the primary developer for Catalyst.
