The hidden-identity social deduction genre, popularized by games like Mafia and Among Us, is getting a single-player twist with Among Us Story: On Guard. Developer InnerSloth is bringing a Hercule Poirot-esque murder mystery to the Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, offering a tonally distinct experience from its multiplayer roots.
During a demo at Summer Game Fest 2026, it was revealed that players step into the shoes of 'Guard,' a role-based moniker for one of the game's Crewmates. The narrative begins with Guard discovering the deceased Cook. The situation quickly escalates as other Crewmates enter the room, framing Guard for the crime. A timely escape through the vents sets Guard on a path to uncover the true Impostor among the ship's ranks.
The game leans heavily into the established Among Us aesthetic while infusing it with humor and character. Guard's internal monologue, delivered in a hard-boiled detective style, often references the absurdity of using vents as a criminal escape route, providing moments of genuine laughter. The demo also featured a segment of interactive physical comedy where Guard chased the Engineer around a room during a heated argument.
Gameplay in Among Us Story: On Guard involves straightforward investigation. Clues are clearly signposted, and puzzle-solving generally requires few steps, avoiding overly complex challenges. The familiar Among Us tasks are incorporated into the investigation, including actions like scooping beans for a coffee machine and the iconic card swipe.
Developed by InnerSloth, the studio behind the original Among Us, this new title aims to capture the charm and intrigue of detective stories. The developers have given each Crewmate distinct personalities, from the Doctor's side hustle to the Engineer's eccentricities, all contributing to a narrative that is intended to engage players and families alike.
Among Us Story: On Guard appears to successfully translate the Among Us formula into a compelling single-player narrative. The blend of familiar gameplay elements, a lighthearted mystery, and engaging characters suggests it could be a hit for both long-time fans of the franchise and newcomers looking for a family-friendly deduction game.
The game is slated for release on Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
