NetEase's ambitious open-world game, Ananta, has been given an official early 2027 release date. The game, often described as "anime Grand Theft Auto," is slated to launch on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC, with mobile versions for Android and iOS also planned. This positions Ananta to potentially rival Rockstar Games' highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, which is set to release on PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2026.
Ananta was prominently featured at Gamescom Opening Night Live, showcasing gameplay that draws inspiration from various popular titles. Players will assume the role of a supernatural investigator battling adversaries. The game features sprawling open-world cities where players can navigate using cars, scooters, and futuristic vehicles, alongside numerous mini-games and activities.
Beyond its Grand Theft Auto-inspired elements, Ananta incorporates mechanics reminiscent of other major titles. Trailers have demonstrated traversal abilities similar to Spider-Man's web-swinging across its vibrant anime-style cities. NetEase appears to be investing heavily in Ananta, aiming to create a comprehensive experience that appeals to a wide range of players.
While Ananta will be free-to-play, it is not structured as a gacha game like Genshin Impact or Honkai: Star Rail. Instead, in-game purchases will focus on cosmetic items, vehicles, and decorations, rather than unlocking characters. In this regard, Ananta is positioned as a social RPG that will likely compete directly with Grand Theft Auto Online.
