Another 2026 box office flop is heading to streaming after a short theatrical run. The Uprising, which was briefly marketed in the U.S. as The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood, will stream exclusively on Peacock in early November. The movie was released in U.S. theaters on September 10, 2026, before grossing $8.2 million against a $20 million budget. It has received somewhat mixed reviews, with 57% of Rotten Tomatoes critics and 65% of audiences giving positive ratings.
While it has become common for theatrical releases to hit streaming services after a few months, films generally debut on Video on Demand platforms first. The Uprising appears to be skipping this step entirely.
What is The Uprising about?
The Uprising is based on England's 1381 Peasants' Revolt. The film follows "The Ploughman" (Andrew Garfield), a farmer grieving his family after the Black Death. When King Richard II’s government increases taxes on the peasantry, The Ploughman leads an uprising against the Crown. The film was written and directed by Paul Greengrass, known for Captain Phillips and the Bourne movies.
The Robin Hood Rebrand
Just weeks before its theatrical release, the film's U.S. distributor, Focus Features, attempted a pivot. Initially presented as a historical drama, the movie was rebranded as The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood. New trailers featured Garfield wielding a bow and dressed in green, with a new summary stating the film "helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood." However, the U.K. distributor stated that the film is a historical epic about the Peasants' Revolt and not about Robin Hood, with marketing materials referencing Robin Hood not being issued or approved by them. Critics noted that the original Robin Hood literature predates the 1381 Peasants' Revolt, making the claim of inspiration unlikely. This rebrand did not appear to significantly boost the film's box-office performance.
Those interested can decide for themselves when The Uprising becomes available on Peacock on November 6.
