Annapurna Interactive and developer Third Shift are set to release Forever Ago, an adventure game that examines themes of loss and grief. While initially appearing to be another somber indie title centered on bereavement, early impressions suggest a more complex narrative exploring the difficulties of moving forward after profound loss.

The game follows Alfred, an elderly man whose wife, Audrey, has recently passed away. She left him a list of activities intended to evoke cherished memories and aid him in his grieving process. The narrative begins with Alfred waking up at a motel, a place filled with happy memories of his time with Audrey. Her posthumous scavenger hunt prompts him to visit local spots, such as a diner and a place where a specific flower grew, that held significance for them.

However, the demo reveals that revisiting these places is not a straightforward path to comfort. The once-familiar diner has been modernized, its atmosphere changed, and the jukebox, once a source of shared joy, is now defunct. The very elements that were meant to trigger comforting nostalgia are either altered or inaccessible, highlighting the gap between idealized memories and present reality. This dissonance underscores Alfred's struggle, as his wife's absence leaves him in an emotional limbo, unable to fully reconnect with the past or find solace in the present.

Forever Ago appears to tackle nostalgia not just as a sentimental device, but as a potentially therapeutic tool that Alfred desperately needs. Yet, the game contrasts this with the harsh realities of an unfeeling modern world that often obstructs these attempts at remembrance. The scattering of the beloved flowers in the motel parking lot serves as a poignant example of how remnants of the past can be fragile and easily lost.

Beyond the initial setting, Alfred's journey is expected to broaden as he encounters other people and revisits significant milestones in his relationship with Audrey. The developer, Third Shift, aims for an ambitious narrative that transcends simple emotional manipulation. The game suggests that moving on involves not just finding strength in past memories but integrating them into the present. Alfred's deeply fractured state is depicted with notable sensitivity, promising a rich and evolving narrative as he navigates his isolation and attempts to rejoin the world.

Forever Ago is scheduled for release on October 8 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
